The Ogun State Government has disclosed that work has commenced on the Lafenwa abattoir.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture and Commissioner designate, Dr Adeola Odedina made this known at the 2020 Butchers Day Celebration in Lafenwa, Abeokuta, adding that work will begin in earnest for the new abattoirs in the three Senatorial Districts of the State, starting with the Lafenwa abattoir.
He stated further that work would commence at the Ogere abattoir, as well as the establishment of new ones in other parts of the State, as a team from the Ministry of Agriculture have inspected other abattoirs in the state with the aim of repositioning the slaughter slabs, noting that butchers play a very vital role, not only in the economy of the State, but also the public health of the residents of the State.
“Imagine a diseased cow, slaughtered and sold to about 500 households, they get infected and the diseases will be transmitted to others neighbours, so this implies that this is a very important sector in the State. Let us join hands with the State Government and key into the Governor’s vision of making Ogun State the food basket of the nation”, Odedina said.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr Dotun Sorunke revealed that it has become imperative to create the facilities considering the increase in demand for beef, due to the high influx of people into the State, saying the facilities to be built by the government would help reduce the transmission of diseases.
“The current administration is ready to complete all abandoned projects, as this administration is not biased, but deals with trending issues that need urgent attention. We therefore implore you all to unify yourselves for the betterment of the members of the group, as there is no progress where there is rancour and bitterness. This sector is a very important sector of the economy”, Dr Sorunke said.
