ABEOKUTA– A member of the ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Wahab Haruna Egungbohun has expressed concerns over the brutal attacks on farmers by marauding herdsmen in his constituency.
The Lawmaker who equally spoke on bad roads, dilapidated schools and the poor health challenges facing by the people living in his constituency said it’s becoming unbearable to be receiving the news of herdsmen everytime as it really make him unrest.
He lamented that herdsmen are becoming threat to people of his community saying that he will no longer open his eyes and let them destroy the future of people like before.
Egungbohun, representing Ketu Constituency II in Yewa North made this disclosure on Monday in an interview with Journalists in Abeokuta, the state capital.
He revealed that since he has been elected into the office, he has been exploring ways to reduce security challenges in his constituency, a move he said is part of a robust relationship he has with all the securities agency in the state.
He also frowned at bad reports escalating every time on the killing of people by the herdsmen and other worsen situation affecting the community which are too painful to describe.
The lawmaker who revealed some of the issues, explained that it has caused reduction in school enrolment because of the day in day out clashes between farmers and wandering herders which they have recorded many deaths in the area.
He also argued that the state government has brought in soldiers to defend the fulanis in order to continue damaging farm products of the farmers of which the lawmaker condemned the act of the government bitterly.
Some of the affected Communities include; Eggua ward, Ijoun ward Igbokofin, oguba Ayetoro, Ohunbe ward moroo, Asa,Agbon, Ibekun, Dangidagi, Ijoun ward, Ebute Ward, Orobi, Korole, and Refurefu in Yewa North local government of the state.
The Honourable said his constituency has last time received government treatment was 2003 during the regime of former governor, Olusegun Osoba with some laudable projects like installation of electricity from Ohunbe to Oja Odan community and since then, nothing of such good development in his constituency.
To prevent the crisis from escalating, the state government was advised to strengthen security for herders and farmers, implement conflict resolution mechanisms and look into the education system by also providing good learning class rooms for students in his constituency.
Hon. Wahab also appealed to the state government to as a matter of urgency set up a committee on a fact finding mission to the border area to ascertain the plight of people living there.
He explained that in the last 8 to 12 years in terms of population and most especially total contributions to the wealth of the State, especially in Yewa (Egbado) North Local Government, Ketu people occupy a position too prominent to overlook.
The lawmaker explained that Ketu alone make up one of the 2 State constituencies in the Local Government and one of the 26 in the State, adding that he see no reason for such local government to continue suffering over the years.
Hon Wahab in his words said “He has been appealing to the state government since he assumed office, adding that other prominent sons and daughters especially those that hold political offices should also appealed to the current administration to extend dividends of democracy to the affected Communities.
According to him, I can not deny the fact that all the past Senators, House of Representatives and Assembly members must have worked tirelessly to achieve this agitation but since it’s yet to achieve, I will like to charge them again to continue pushing this agitation till the aim is achieved.
Wahab who launded Governor Abiodun for the ongoing work to alleviate sufferings on roads in some parts of the state, said the Governor should not leave any stones unturned.
He therefore appreciated his efforts so far on the prompt action by rekindled the health issues in the state saying that the Constituency he represent also need a dividends of democracy.
