ABEOKUTA– The Vice President, Ogun State Handball Association, Adeyemi George has described the handball seminar sponsored by him as a way to enlightened the coaches and referees on new trends in the sport.
George, popularly known as Osawe stated that handball being a structural game can overtake football if proper planning is put in place.
He added that the seminar became imperative to bring to fore the recent General Williams invention in the sport, noting that coaches and referees must keep themselves abreast of changes to meet with international standards.
“I decided to sponsore the 4 by 4 handball seminar to enlighten the new version of handball being invented by General Williams and this technical crew.
“If we able to compete in the Commonwealth, we must follow the trends. So, when the opportunity came then, I accept to be part of bringing enlightenment of the 4 by 4 handball seminar to the South West.
“What did I want to achieve here, it seems that this 4 by 4 will get more popular among the handballers in Nigeria, why, because we don’t need to be 7 players before we go on playing
” There are different version of it that can be possible we don’t need to wait for the whole court to be played,it is a half court game which is way bring much excitement and much fun into it”, he said
The seminar, which was held on the 18th to 20th February, 2025 in Abeokuta, the ogun state capital, had in attendance coaches and referees from the 6 states in the South West of the country.
Osawe however promise to support the 4 by 4 initiative in handball, saying that it will help to promote the sport in the grassroots.
“I think there are other ways that we can still work together and make sure that handball is being more exposed to the people in Nigeria
“Don’t forget that during General Williams time, handball almost overshadowed football in Nigeria. Handball became the most second game known in Nigeria.
“How and why, because of the structure that was laid and the target that was set able to propel handball the more popular in Nigeria then, and until when he left to develop other sports and then many things went in another direction and that is why I’m more interested in coming to southwest to come and lay another structure, because handball is not seasonal game it is a very structural game”, he alluded
