ABEOKUTA– The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Olakunle Oluomo has said the country is not a democratic state, but merely practicing civil rule.
Oluomo made this assertion while delivering his goodwill message at the 2022 Independence Day Anniversary Lecture organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held at the Labour Hall, Leme in Abeokuta.
He said for the country to be truly democratic, institutions and legislative arms should be empowered to carry out it’s full responsibilities, alluding that the country is not yet at the level.
He however called for a vibrant legislature, saying that it is the bedrock for a vibrant democracy.
“The major challenge we have in Nigeria is building a vibrant legislature. if we don’t map one like i said last year in most state what we are experiencing is mere simple civil rule and not democracy.
“If we have a vibrant legislature, we would have what is called democracy so”, Oluomo said
The Anniversary Lecture with the theme, ‘Nigeria In Search For An Enduring Political Structure: Imperative Of Structural Reform had as guest lecturer, Barr. Mike Ozekhome SAN.
