Tuition Hike: NANS Issues 14 Days Ultimatum To El-Rufai Or Face Mass Action

ABEOKUTA– The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issue a 14 day ultimatum to the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to reverse all increments in state owned institutions.

The apex students governing body made this known on Monday, in a press conference addressed by its National President, Comrade Okereafor Bestman Opeyemi at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Secretariat Iwe Iroyin Oke Ilewo Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital

According to the NANS President, he stated that the decision of the Kaduna State government to increase the tuition is retrogressive and unjust, adding that the students body will resist the decision with it’s machineries.

“The attention of the apex students governing body, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has been drawn to a retrogressive decision of the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai to unjustly increase the school fees of state owned institutions.

“Info at our disposal reveals that a student of College of Education, Gidan Waya, Kafanchan was shot dead by security operatives during the peaceful protest on Monday 28th June, 2021 against the planned hike in their tuition fee.

“We hereby give the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Elrufai a 14 days ultimatum to reverse all increments in state owned institutions in Kaduna State”, he stated

The students’ body also said it believes that the arrests of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a clear note of warning for persons seeking the division of the country, adding that it believe strongly in the unity and indivisibility of the country.

Comrade Okereafor therefore said the student body is disassociating itself from a purported NANS meeting with Sheik Gumi, an alleged friend of notorious bandit, kidnappers and killers of the students, adding that it has absolute confidence in the gallant and intelligence security agents, while imploring them to ensure prompt release of abducted students still in captivity.
