ABEOKUTA– The Super Falcons of Nigeria and their Benin Republic counterpart played out a 1:1 draw in the second leg Women African Cup Of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier match played at the MKO Abiola Sports complex, Abeokuta on Tuesday
A beautiful header from the Nigeiran Oyinbo, Ashleigh Plumptre in the 34th minutes from a precise Esther Okoronkwo corner kick, compounded the woes of the squirrel ladies who had previously lost the first leg 2goals to nil in Lome, Togo.
As play resumes for the second 45minutes, the Beninoise mounted pressure for an equaliser and were rewarded in the 61st minutes through a direct free kick from the left flank by Yasminath Djibril, beating African number one goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie off guide.
Despite creating a few chances late in the game, the Falcons couldn’t find the winner in the keenly contested match.
Speaking after the match, a seemingly disappointed Coach Justine Madugu noted that though the team played below expectations, he is however happy for the qualification.
“In terms of results, sometimes there can be off days, there can be bad days and we want to consider today’s match from that perspective.
“To some extent, even the performance was not what we need but we expected it. It didn’t come so much as a surprise because even in press conference yesterday we knew it was going to be a tough game”, he said
The 10th time African champion will be hoping to make it eleventh time at the 2026 African mundial in Morocco.
