SAGAMU– The on-going road re-construction of the Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway being embarked upon by the Ogun State Government has continue to create an horrific experience in the mind of commuters who ply the road daily considering the danger it has posed during the reconstruction work
The road which is 42km long and 14:6m wide, is the major route linking Abeokuta, the State Capital to Lagos and Eastern parts of the Country.
When The News Ville took a tour of the road recently to ascertain the level of work done so far, it was observed that the level of safety at the road is non existent thereby putting the lives and goods of commuters at danger.
One of the commuters who spoke with The News Ville on condition of anonymity said that the Abeokuta-Sagamu road re-construction plan is dangerously planned to affect the commuters and even villagers along the route adding that the way the trucks driver even behave at night is like they are ‘sent to kill’
“I ply this road every now and then because as essential worker with a food processing company along this axis, I don’t have a choice. It has been God that has been protecting us on this road. The company handling this project didn’t make use of safety signs at all and it’s even worst at night with these truck drivers”
” I wish the Governor can help us to tell the road constructor to create some good safety signs, because this is becoming more like a ‘death trap’ ” he said
Another commuter identified as Kay said the rate of accident on the road has increased tremendously owing to the one way driving without proper safety signs adopted by the company handling the construction.
Kay said “a woman was knocked down by a bus yesterday, thank God she didn’t die as the impact was somehow minimal. We call on the government to as a matter of urgency intervene by calling the company to do the right thing, especially the lighting of the corners at night”
Recall that only four days ago a staff bus belonging to one of the food manufacturing company along the Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway was involved in an accident, that almost claimed the lives of the the occupants in the bus. All the said staffs are still recuperating at the hospital as at the time of filing this report.
