ABEOKUTA– The Chief of Staff to Ogun State Governor, Dr. Toyin Taiwo has been bestowed with the Pillar of Good Governance Award by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council.
Dr. Taiwo was awarded at the council’s monthly Congress held at the NUJ secretariat, Iwe Iroyin in Abeokuta, the state capital on Thursday.
Represented by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Mr Wasiu Taiwo, the Chief of Staff emphasized the crucial roles of the media in informing the public, scrutinizing leadership, and shaping national discourse.
He therefore urges journalists to uphold the highest standards of objectivity, impartiality, and investigative integrity, adding that journalism as a cornerstone of accountability and transparency in governance across all sectors of society.
“Journalism serves as the watchdog of democracy, holding power accountable and exposing hidden truths without fear or favor.
“Here in Ogun State, we take pride in our rich heritage of journalistic excellence. We are the birthplace of media legends like Chief Olusegun Osoba and the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande.
“In an age of misinformation and political polarization, the profession must divest itself of partisanship and recommit to the core values of ethical reporting”, he said
He therefore assured that the Ogun State government would continue to strive for excellence in governance, development, and democratic leadership, while supporting the media to uphold its ethics
In a goodwill message, the Ogun state Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya reiterated the media’s vital role in governance, emphasizing its responsibility to inform, educate, and shape public discourse.
“I wish to also extend my charge to the media to continue in the discharge
of its duty with utmost professionalism and a sense of responsibility.
“While constructive criticism is essential for good governance, it must be devoid of bias or undue sensationalism. Objectivity should always be the watchword as a well-informed society is critical to national development.
“The media must remain steadfast in promoting what unites us as a people and resist the temptation of propagating divisive narratives that could threaten our collective progress”, he added
Earlier, the NUJ chairman, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju, describe the awardee as a steadfast and dedicated public servant, whose contributions to the collective journey of the state towards good governance and community welfare cannot be overemphasized
“Dr. Taiwo embodies these ideals. His commitment to enhancing the quality of governance in Ogun State is nothing short of inspiring. He has consistently demonstrated that effective leadership is rooted in compassion and dedication to the citizens.
“Through his efforts, he has not only uplifted the voice of the people but has also established a framework for accountability and progress that will benefit generations to come”, he said
