ABEOKUTA– The Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu has frown at the state of some Primary Health Centres in the state, calling of the State government to as a matter of urgency rehabilitate them.
Prof. Olomu made this call Saturday while delivery a speech at the 2020 World Television Day held at the Telemedicine Hall, Federal Medical Center (FMC) Idi Aba, Abeokuta.
He noted that the primary health centers in the state are in a critical condition, adding that there is no need for government to build new health centers, only that the existing ones needs to be renovated.
”I want to appeal to the state government to renovate all existing primary health centers in the state, the health centers are in a critical condition, instead of building new ones, the governor should rehabilitate the new ones. He said
Speaking on the theme; Building A Post Covid-19 Nigeria, the Chief Medical Director added that medical institutions in the country could not admit more than 50 students due to insufficient teaching facilities to train students.
“If you bring 50 doctors to FMC for instance, it will be of no effect even with the ones we have already. Government should fund the education sector. 26 percent of every country’s budget has been recommended by the United Nations (UN) for the educational sector
“If government pumps that percentage into the sector, we will have enough class rooms, adequate facilities, employ enough lecturers of course, the narrative will change,” he added.
Speakking earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman, Consolidated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, Comrade Kazeem Olowe said that 2020 remains a year to remember, starting with prolong battle with Covid 19 pandemic and lockdown to the Endsars protest, not leaving the other ones like ASUU strike, fuel and electricity tarrif increase in Nigeria; Donald Trump and the American election to mention but a few.
He also noted that this year is loaded with many events that affects human wellbeing and following up on all these and getting clearer and real pictures of the events was made possible through the Television.
”As a group of practising broadcast journalists, the responsibility of celebrating the World Television day falls on us and we have decided to take up the responsibility by not only celebrating, but to take advantage of today to look at the aftermarth of the pandemic -Building a post COVID-19 Nigeria with a focus on the country’s health sector -challenges and opportunities.
Comrade Olowe however lauded the Ogun State Government, private organizations and some notable personalities in the state for standing firm in support of the masses during the Covid-19 lockdown.
