ABEOKUTA– One of the owners of Private Secondary Schools in Ogun State, Hon. Wale Bello of Comprehensive Academy, Abeokuta has called on the government to further liase with West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) to shift the date slated for SS3 to write their exams, sighting short time frame for preparation owing to the covid-19 lockdown.
Speaking with Journalists on inspection to some private schools in the State, Hon. Wale Bello said, “the short time given to us to prepare will have negative effect, it may not be now but in the future”
“Psychologically, we have to take their mind from the society. Some of them have been hawking. How do we take their minds away, it has to take at least three to four days so we have a lot of work to do”
“I am not calling for postponement of the examination but I am calling for extension of that two weeks, possibly a week and that will go a long way. That one week will go a long way in assisting not only the students but also the schools”
“The two weeks is not okay for the students. I want to called on the government to shift the examination”
The school boss further reteraites that before the covid-19 pandemic lockdown, the school have prepared the students for the examination but the outbreak of the pandemic halted the whole process making it difficult to access the readiness of each students for the examination.
In his words, “before the outbreak of the pandemic we have already prepared the students for the examination very well unfortunately the pandemic has made us to suspend everything”
“During that pandemic period, we had online teaching but online teaching is not reliable because the students we were taking online we didn’t know what they are doing exactly, some of them were receiving lecture when they are on Okada, some of the were receiving while going on the road, we couldn’t say actually what they were doing”
“So when the government asked us to resume, we were glad, we were happy, immediately we put the machinery in place, the first day we were asked to resume, we have prepared the ground, we have provided isolation centers for them which can accommodate 6 students at a time, we dont pray for them to have the disease you accident will not tell you that it is coming so we have provided medical personnel of the school with necessary equipment.
One of the students, Miss Oguntoyinbo Ayomide said despite the joy of resumption, she has forgotten almost all that she was taught before the covid-19 pandemic.
“The academics, It’s really too much for me, I have forgotten a lot of thing, but with the help of our teachers, we are going to put in our best”
“However, the time given us is not enough to cover up every topics but what can we do, but we are calling on the government to help us shift the date” she said
