ABEOKUTA– The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polythecnics and the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), MAPOLY chapter has appealed to the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun to save the institution from total collapse under the present management.
The call which is coming on the heels of the same outcry by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) is needed to further bring to bear the burning issues facing the institution, the acting Chairman of association, Comrade Lekan Dada said.
Dada, in a press briefing on Wednesday in Abeokuta decries what he regarded as a total neglect of the staff by the school management, saying staff can no longer take care of their health owing to non payment of salaries.
“It is no more news that the management of the polytechnic cannot pay November and December, 2021 salaries as this has been made known in different fora.
“It is important to note that a good number of staff cannot take care of their health owing to the non- payment of salary, it is equally important for staff to celebrate the yuletide with their salary”, he stressed
Speaking further, Comrade Dada hinted that the delay by the State government to constitute Governing council for 2 years and 6 months is unconstitutional, adding that the council if constituted is the only body empowered by the Polytechnic to carry out or perform certain functions.
The acting Chairman further stressed that their is need for the State Government to as a matter of importance appoint a substantive rector for the institution, saying that the present management as constituted has outlived it’s statutory tenure in acting capacity.
“The refusal of the state government to appoint a substantive rector for the Polytechnic leaves much to be desired. This is even when the state government is aware that it’s current stand of appointing someone in acting capacity over 2 years is against the Polytechnic Act”, he said
Speaking on the Non remittance of the pensions of members of staff of the institution, Dada said that pension deductions of members of staff of the institution have not been remitted to the relevant Pension Fund Administrators for years.
He added the institution have also refused to pay its part of the contributory pension which has left so many of their members retiring without getting anything in form of Pension or gratuity.
Dada further accused the school management of delaying promotion and appointment exercise saying that the last promotion and appointment exercise of the school was done in 2018.
