ABEOKUTA– A student of Obada Grammar School, in Imeko Afon local government area of Ogun state, Monday Ariyo has allegedly died after receiving 24 strokes of the cane and 162 frog jumps as punishment from a teacher.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, said the deceased was confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, the state capital.
She however said contrary to reports of being beaten 162 with a cane, Ariyo was made to perform 162 frog jumps and was beaten 24 strokes of the cane.
“The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane.
“He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention and he died today (October 25). The deceased body has been deposited at the Ayetoro mortuary for autopsy. An investigation is ongoing.”
Similarly, the State Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Comrade Felix Oluwaseun Agbesanwa condemns conflicting reports as it relate to the incident.
Agbesanwa stated that the student had earlier sustained injuries from a motorbike accident, and such was not well when beaten and purnished by the teacher.
He however said the Union is on top of the matter, while expressing his condolences to the parents of the deceased.
“Please permit me to give you all what happened, the deceased was not the only one beaten but the entire class of SS2
” When the Principal of the school was addressing the students on the assembly that she has used her money to buy big waste dust bins for the school which shall be placed at strategic place in the compound, one of them said ‘is it not with our money that you used to buy it’, the principal asked them to fetch the culprit out but none of them was ready to talk, this made the whole class to be given two strokes of a cane each in the presence of the school Principal and not 162 as the blogger have said.
“It was later on that when they found out after the deceased have been beaten that he fell down and was quickly treated medically that they found marks on his body, after he regained consciousness. The deceassd when asked said he had a bike accident prior to the time he was beaten.
” It’s a pity we lost our son but in the interest of the live involved, I appeal that we allow the matter to be because the parent is still mourning now seriously.
“The Union leadership is on top of this issue and we are planning to visit the parent anytime . A sane individual at this time won’t be writing or sending unwarranted video that will be bringing sorrow more to the deceased parent.
“May God comfort and console our dear parent of the deceased and may we not see this type again in our midst. As we all know every job has his hazards, this is one of the hazards we must accept”, he added
