ABUJA– The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has affirmed the suspension of eight members of the Ogun state council for constitutional breaches.
The decision was reached at the Union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, on Wednesday.
The motion for their suspension was moved by Enugu State council chairman and was seconded by the chairman of Imo state council
In a communique issued at the end of the NEC meeting, Wole Shokunbi, Folake Ade-Adeniji, Razak Ayinla, Modupe Salabiu, Joke Adeleye, Kunle Ibikunle, Seun Odunlami, and Sekinat Salam-Opebiyi were suspensded for instituting legal action against the Union.
Their action was in defiance to Article 7 (5d) of the NUJ Constitution, which stipulated that no member shall Institute a court proceedings without first exhausting internal dispute resolution mechanisms.
Recall that the 8 members had gone to court to challenge the Ogun council election, held in December 2025, while sueing both state and national body of the Union.
“NEC approved the suspension of seven members of the Ogun State Council for instituting legal action against the Union without exhausting internal dispute resolution mechanisms, in breach of Article 7 (5d) of the NUJ Constitution. The suspended members are: Wole Shokunbi, Folake Ade-Adeniji, Razak Ayinla, Modupe Salabiu, Joke Adeleye, Kunle Ibukunle, Seun Odunlami, and Sekinat Salam-Opebiyi”, the communique reads
The communique signed by the National Secretary of the Union, Achike Chude also passed a vote lf confidence of the National Leadership of the Union led by its president, Alhassan Yahya.
The communique further reads, “NEC commended the National President for significant strides in members’ welfare, training programmes, and innovations in repositioning the NUJ.
“The NEC particularly noted the successful hosting of the NEC meeting without external support and unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the Comrade Alhassan Yahya-led administration”,
