Gender Development Initiative (GenDi), a non-governmental organisation committed to the empowerment of disadvantaged children and women in the society has marked the 2020 international women’s day with a call on the government to create more awareness on the Violence Against Person prohibition (VAPP) law while backing it up with free legal services for disadvantaged women in the society.
Speaking at the press conference in commemoration of the celebration held in Abeokuta, the Executive Director, GenDi, Prof. Olubunmi Ashimolowo said that to achieve a better society for the women folks, there is need for the government to make the 30 percent affirmative action on women a reality.
She further stated that the government needs to see NGOs as partners in progress and reinstate previous supports given in the past adding that the institute needs more funds to support women in agriculture and women entrepreneurs.
“As we call towards a better society for women folks, we wish to solicit that the Ogun State government should establish additional correctional homes and expands the capacity of the existing motherless babies home”
“Review of existing laws and policies on women and adolescents reproductive rights in order to reflect the current reality on ground as contained in the criminal and penal code”
“From the general public, we wish to solicit for philanthropist support for the execution of our various projects. Improve corporate social responsibilities of companies around Ogun State, so as to allow the people reap the dividend of government’s efforts” she said
Prof. Ashimolowo therefore solicits for international and national support on issues relating to women and children in general, adding that exchange programme for volunteers and staff within and across the globe will assist in capacity building for the management of women based issues in the country.
GenDi, with an operational success spanning over 10 years have contributed in numerous ways to the Development of children, youths and women through strategic activities across the country.
