The Organised Labour and Civil Society Organisation in Ogun State today formally inaugurate a situation room in the fight against covid-19.
Speaking at the inauguration at the Nigeria Labour Congress Secretariat, Abiola Way, Abeokuta, the State Coverner and Chairman of NLC in the State, Comrade Emmanuel Abimbola Bankole said that the body was formed at the instance of the national leadership of the Union to provide a platform for all Labour movements in combating the covid-19 pandemic.
Comrade Bankole further stated that the global economy and means of livelihood has been put at risk by covid-19 pandemic, hence the need for setting up the committee for effective collaboration by all in the fight against covid-19.
“The global pandemic is of immense importance to the working populace because we seem to be the most endangered, apart from the direct impact on our existence as human being, our jobs and means of livelihood is also at great risk”
“This body is formed to provide a platform for all labour movements, professional groups and civil society organisations to ensure synergy and well coordinated efforts in combating covid-19 pandemic that has become a threat to the well-being of humanity” he said
He also reteraites that the objective of the body will include sensitisation of workers and citizens on the reality, prevalence and containment measures against covid-19, adding that the body will also embark on advocacy and social dialogue with government and private sectors employers on workers protection.
“To achieve these objectives, we shall be embarking on advocacy and awareness campaign to government agencies, health facilities, industries and major markets across the state. The situation room will also be replicated in all the 20 local government areas in the State for effective coverage” he said
Comrade Bankole while commending the health professionals who are in the frontline stressed that the good people of the state should continue to observe all precautionary measures as advised by the health professionals.
