ABEOKUTA— The Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Professor Felix Kolawole Salako yesterday distributed stimulus package to journalists in Ogun State as part of the university’s support to cushion the effect of Coronavirus.
Prof Salako further made a call for agricultural revolution in the country, adding that it is time to move away from total dependence on crude oil.
Speaking with newsmen, the Vice Chancellor said ” like I said, we are very proactive in our university. Just last week Friday, a committee started meeting on intensive food production post Covid-19″
“I directed that the Deputy Director, farm development start coordinating our farms so we are going to start intense production of cassava, rice and poultry in particular. I have also Commissioned somepeople to start work by last Friday”
“With what we are seeing now, Nigeria needs to be very careful. If we have crude oil now and it’s not selling at all from what we are hearing and even if we are selling, it has always been part of the issue in Nigeria that we needed to refocus from crude oil to agriculture. It is not as if we have not done it in the past, I have said it and i will repeat it that the kind of farm settlements we had in the past, we need to revisit them”
“In our university, we are making move and we are already coordinating that, to produce crops intensively and livestock because we realise that something must be done urgently to take care of Nigerians so that they won’t go hungry post Covid-19”
