ABEOKUTA–One person was reportedly killed while about 15 others sustained injuries from gunshots and machetes attacks at a campaign rally of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress ( APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at Ori Omi Sokori, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital turned bloody.
The campaign was organised and sponsored by Chief Michael Agboola, a staunch member of the APC in the State. He however escaped narrowly to the nearby bush when the fracas broke out.
The Newsville reports that, Sokori, a village in Abeokuta North Local Government Area, is the nearest hometown of the Nigeria Ex-President, Olusegun Obasanjo.
The incident which came barely 24 hours after seven out of nine governorship candidates met at the Ogun State Police Headquarters, Eleweran and signed a peace accord ahead of the presidential, Senatorial and House of the Representatives elections, happened around 6pm.
The APC, in a statement signed by the Director General of the Gov. Dapo Abiodun Campaign Organisation, Segun Adesegun and made available to newsmen, said contrary to the claims by the PDP Campaign Organization, that the APC attacked them first.
He said it was the hoodlums of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), supporters and some men in masks, who attacked the APC campaign, vandalizing their vehicles at the venue.
Adesegun said the PDP deliberately disrupt the campaign, saying no supporter of APC was involved in the brutal incident.
Adesegun explained that Agboola was lucky not to have been maim in the incident, saying he has to run for his dear life.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of Ogun State Peoples Democratic Party Campaign Council, Farouk Mustapha had accused the APC and its candidate of being responsible for the attack.
He alleged that Agboola, led thugs belonging to the APC party to unleash terror on the PDP members during their rally at the Sokori area, which is closer to Ori Omi where the APC party are also holding their rally, same day, and also destroyed billboards of the PDP at the rally.
Mustapha said, ‘’Today ( Friday ) is one of the saddest days in the political history of Ogun State”.
He said “We are once again using this opportunity to appeal to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, to use his good offices to stem the undemocratic practice of APC in Ogun State, against opposition parties”.
