As part of his 3 days working visit to Ogun State, the President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Prince Chris Isiguzo on Wednesday visit the Commissioner of Police CP Kenneth Ebrimson at the police headquarters, Eleweran Abeokuta.
The President who spoke extensively about the cordial relationship that have existed between the journalists and the Police Commands said that the NUJ under his leadership will continue to offer it’s role to the police for a more secure society.
“Well the commissioner of police, we are so pleased to be here this afternoon, like the caretaker chairman did say the last time we were here was in October 2018 during our national election and this goes to hundreds of journalist from across the 36 states in the country”
“First of all, i must have to express our profound gratitude to the Nigerian police for providing the necessary security for us to go through that process and we did not record any unpleasant situation, so we indeed want to thank you”
“Mr commissioner, our visit to Ogun State is in continuation of our Nationwide followup of councils and meeting with journalist, interacting with them, knowing how they are fairing and also encouraging them to continue to do good in life, In the face of the obvious challenges” the President said
Isiguzo further appreciates the synergy and good working relationship between the police command and the NUJ in Ogun State while appealing that the police should continue to provide the needed support when required.
The Commissioner of police, CP Kenneth Ebrimson in his response admonished journalists to always have a background check on the varacity of crime stories before going to the public as such sometimes causes the police embarrassment.
” I remember when I resumed duty on 27 Nov 2019, I did tell the press men that please if there are any issue that you did not understand, instead of going out to get some stories that will agitate members of the public, come to me and if I am unable to clarify whatever issues you want then go ahead and do your publications”
“Sometimes, you see screaming headlines, but if you go to read it, it is not part of what has happened. This are the area we are having a little bit challenges and sometimes the policemen who are now trying to absorb some of this thing will look at other side of the devide as if they are seriously against the police or to run the whole situation down”
” I think these are the only challenges. Balancing Reportage is very important, by the time you get what you want to report, clarify from the PPRO the truth and correct version” the CP said
