IKOM– The 2024 edition of the Governor’s Cup has successfully reached the knock-out stage of the competition as this was declared open with a formal kick-off by the Executive Chairman of Ikom LGA, Hon. Pst. [Mrs] Mercy Nsor during the football match between the Atlantic Warriors of Bakassi vs Boki Warriors at the Ikom township stadium.
Hon. Mercy applauded the efforts of the State Government under the leadership of Apostle Sen. [Prince] Bassey Edet Otu for giving the sports sector adequate attention, judging from the fact that sports, especially football, remain one of those activities that promote unity and peace in the society.
In her words; “Sports, especially football, in particular, play a significant role in society, offering numerous benefits that extend beyond the playing field. Outside the promotion of physical health, it also fosters social connections, promotes national pride and Identity, and provides economic benefits to support youth development.
The governor has great foresight and this is evident in his desire to support and encourage sporting activities in the State. The competition is timely because it has created a synergy between sisters LGAs especially as the organizers saw to it that LGAs played their matches in other sisters LGAs across the State.
I commend His Excellency, Apostle Sen. [Prince] Bassey Edet Otu for promoting peace and unity using various formats and sectors of the government. On my part as the Chief Security Officer of Ikom LGA, sporting activities will continue to be encouraged in line with the policies and visions of the State Government. This I’ve started through the reviving of our prestigious Ekabokon Football Club, with many more to come.”
The Chairman provided financial and material support to the organizers of the competition in Ikom and reassured them of continuous peace, security, and hospitality throughout their stay in Ikom.
The Atlantic Warriors of Bakassi lost by a lone goal to the Boki Warriors who have now progressed to the Quarter Finals of the competition.
