ABEOKUTA– The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter today at the NUJ Secretariat, Iwe Iroyin house, Oke Ilewo inaugurate it’s new Executive Members to pilot the affairs of the association for the new three years.
The Chairman of the Association, Mr Hakeem Akintunde while giving his acceptance speech stated that under his watch, the body of sports writers in the state is geared towards redefining sports journalism through constant training.
He further charged the State Government and the Ogun State House of Assembly to speed up the Sports Commission and Sports Trust Fund bills before the assembly as a way of revitalising the dead glory of sports in the State.
“The establishment of Ogun Sports Commission will take away the burden of funding the sector off the shoulder of the State government, while allowing professional and private investors to drive the sporting sector of the state”
“It is on this premise I want to call on Ogun State Government to invest heavily in sports development in the state and see the robust development of the sector as another avenue to create employment and take the youths off the street” he added.
He therefore assures members of the association of constant seminars, workshop and training to update themselves of modern practice of sports journalism with the view of being better equipped and remain the best among equals at all times.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports, represented by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth and Sports, Comrade Lamide Lawal reteraites the government desire to restore the glory days of sports in the state.
He added that in the last 18months, the government in collaboration with different public partnership has organise various sporting activities, adding that the uplifting and rebranding of the famous Muda Lawal Stadium, Asero is in the pipeline.
Also speaking, a one time treasurer of the Association, Prince Dimeji Adedeji admonished the new Exco to liase with YSFON in discovery of talents in the state.
He further urge the Exco to open up and update the membership of the association to accommodate more eligible members willing to join the association.
Other members of the executive includes, Jonathan Adekunle (Vice Chairman), Micheal-Azeez Ogunsiji (Secretary), Bayo Adegboyega (Asst. Secretary), and Lekan Agbonde (Treasurer).
