ABEOKUTA– The crisis rocking the Ogun state Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), is far from over as waste vendors storms the Ogun State House of Assembly Complex, calling for the removal of the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya.
The Protesters, who leveled several grave accusations against the Commissioner and the Special Adviser, Farouk Akintunde, stated that the commissioner was backing and giving recognition to a splinter faction of the Association despite a High Court interlocutory injunction.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Chairman of the Association, Kunle Adesanya accused Oresanya of using the recently posted Special Adviser, OGWAMA, Farouq Akintunde as a puppet to systematically dismantle Hunye’s leadership.
“Ola Oresanya is instigating that group of suspended members of the Association to parade themselves. Since the matter is in court, they’re not supposed to be recognized or invited to meetings. It is uncalled for in a case that is already in court”, Adesanya stated.
The Vendors claimed that Akintunde has returned the agency to a dark era of multiple registration and unchecked corruption, signposted by the illegal cancellation of valid licenses and demand for reapplication.
“The second issue is that all registration done and certificates issued while Hunye was in office have been canceled and vendors asked to register again. That is not supposed to be”, Adesanya lamented.
Brandishing placards with slogans such as ‘Ola Oresanya Must Go’, ‘Gov Dapo Abiodun, Save Our Soul’, ‘Multiple Registration of Vendors Must Stop’, ‘Farouk Must Not Cancel our Registration’, ‘Ola Oresanya is Not Competent to be in charge of Ogun State Environmental Issues’, Farouq is Ola Oresanya Puppet. Save Our Soul’, the vendors appealed to the Governor to intervene before the state’s waste management sector collapses under the weight of administrative recklessness
Meanwhile, the embattled Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), Abayomi Hunye, has dismissed reports of his sack, clarifying that he is currently on a compulsory leave pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, Hunye sought to set the record straight following his appearance at the Ogun State House of Assembly.
His hearing, originally scheduled for Thursday 12 March, has been moved to Monday, March 16, 2026.
Hunye emphasized that the circumstance has been willfully misrepresented by some media outlets as a termination of his appointment.
“I was not sacked. I was directed to proceed on leave to allow for an investigation into allegations leveled against me. The letter is clear on this; any claim to the contrary is a distortion of the facts.”
While reacting on a phone conversation with Newsmen, Oresanya denied the allegations, and said that, he doesn’t relate with any Association and has no business in OGWAMA, insisting that, they should bring any evidence they have to back the allegations.
According to Oresanya ” i don’t know any Association, i don’t deal with them and I’m not working in OGWAMA. Those allegations are in their own digression and i have nothing to do with that. If anyone has proof for that, they can bring it out”.
