ABEOKUTA– Danger was averted early Saturday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital when a truck loaded with about 50,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) caught fire at the Governor’s Office entrance Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.
The driver, who identifies himself as Nurudeen Yusuf speaking with The News Ville said the truck was loaded at Forte Oil, Ijora and was enroute Mobil, Adatan.
He further disclosed that he and his other two motor boy discovered a spark from the engine, which resulted in fire outbreak. The occupants of the truck were subsequently evacuated by members of the Fire Service, stationed at Oke Mosan.
Also speaking, the leader of the Federal Fire Service to the scene, DSF Sodiq Atanda said it took the timely Intervention of his men to put off the fire before it gets to the body of the truck which could have had more damaging impart.
In his words, “if not for the proximity of our station and the timely Intervention of our men, this situation would have been worse
” How can a truck loaded with products worth millions of Naira not have a fire extinguisher”, he queried
He also stressed that, the situation would have been abated if only the truck has a fire extinguisher, adding that the cause of the incident was minor as such could have been put off of there was fire extinguisher in the truck.
He however advised that truck owners and Investors in oil and gas should endeavor to always do the right thing, saying that “a stitch in time would have save nine”.
The truck head was totally burnt, however no lives was lost in the incident.
