ABEOKUTA– The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), JCC Ogun Axis has stated that it is investigating and making fact findings to unravel the unfortunate arrests and detention of its former Chairman, Comrade Olawale Balogun.
Recall that Olawale Balogun was arrested with five others on Saturday in relation to the attack at Ake Palace, during the factional state congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a release signed by the Chairman, Comrade Damilola Simeon Kehinde (Da Osmos) and it’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Comrade Olufemi MVP Owoeye, the students reteraites that Nigerian Students movement is non political and must remain so, to ensure the sanctity of our union.
The statement further reads, “We have been actively seeking for the emancipation of our Comrade, Olawale Balogun who was arrested on Saturday alongside some hoodlums.
“From Saturday to now, we have engaged different stakeholders and officials in fact-finding missions. This is needed so we can fully understand the issue.
“Albeit, we will not hesitate to wade in appropriately in solidarity with our Comrades and Students as the need may arise. This explains our interest in the arrest of Olawale Balogun”.
It however states that, though NANS maintained it’s belief in the innocence of Comrade Olawale Balogun, it however stressed that the Nigeria Police Force must ensure that due process is followed so as to ensure that the innocent is not punished.
While disregarding the call from some students quarters on the prosecution of the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, the students body maintained that the spurious allegations raised does not reflects the true stance of the Nigerian Students.
It therefore called on the Nigeria Police Force, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the general public to disregard the statement as it is not from the leadership of Nigerian Students.
